Kanas is really, really rich. That alone, of course, doesn’t qualify anyone to make this list, but Kanas has arguably been the central figure in Long Island banking for years. Kanas’ power has come from spreading the Long Island business doctrine throughout the region and growing under the North Fork flag. This company never shied away from its Long Island roots and has always been an integral figure as an employer and a “go-to” company for Long Island charities and causes. The case could be made that his power will decrease as a result of the buyout by Capital One, but we’re going to assume that John Kanas with a few hundred million dollars to spare is a powerful thing.
