9. Stanley Bergman
2016 Power List
Since joining the medical products wholesaler in 1980, Stanley Bergman, a Certified Public Accountant born in South Africa, has worn many hats for this widely acclaimed Fortune 500 company, which now boasts more than 21,000 Team Schein Members, and operates—either directly or through affiliates—in 32 countries, from Canada to New Zealand. The Melville-based healthcare giant has become a worldwide leader in providing lifesaving products and services, whether supplying the gloves dentists wear or developing the software veterinarians use to remind pet owners it’s time for their dogs’ checkup. Schein’s stock shares have risen 22 percent annually, on average, since 2000—a phenomenal rate of return. No doubt when Bergman signed a three-year contract extending his tenure as CEO last April, the stockholders all smiled with relief. They know Henry Schein is in good hands. Bergman remains active in the American Dental Association and the Forsyth Institute, a highly regarded oral health research institution. He also serves on the Board of Trustees at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, New York University College of Dentistry, the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa, Tel Aviv University, the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, and the Long Island Association. With his wife Marion, a pulmonologist, and their family, Bergman is an active supporter of programs that promote the arts, higher education and grassroots healthcare in the United States. He’s a firm believer in giving back to the community, and Long Island is fortunate to have him on board.
