16. John Cameron
2016 Power List
Now in his 33rd year in business, John Cameron has led his firm to become our area’s premier leader in consulting engineering and planning, serving the public and private sectors throughout Long Island and the New York metropolitan area with state-of-the-art technical solutions to the most pressing problems of the day. In recognition of his expertise and insight, he chairs the Long Island Regional Planning Council, where he weighs in on important policy matters affecting our area, and he represents the Island on the New York Works Task Force, a 15-member group that seeks to improve infrastructure in the Empire State. An engineering graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, Cameron was named “Kings Pointer of the Year” last year, the highest alumni recognition awarded by his alma mater. He also holds a master’s degree in environmental science from Long Island University, and has an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Molloy College. He serves on the boards of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County, the Hofstra University and Stony Brook University Engineering Schools, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association. A lifelong surfer, Cameron grew up in Long Beach, where he caught his first waves. Now he and his wife Loretta reside in Rockville Centre, as do their married children, and grandsons. For his philanthropic efforts and his dedication to improving the Island’s quality of life, Cameron and his firm have received many local, state and national awards over the years, but nothing can compare to his winning WNBC’s “Yankee Bat Boy for a Day” contest and getting to sit in the dugout with his childhood heroes, such as Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and Whitey Ford. A dream come true, it still puts a smile on his face. His extraordinary ability to improve the lives of countless Long Islanders through Cameron Engineering & Associates’ many projects puts a smile across their faces, too.
