Kanas and his Melville-based banking behemoth, North Fork Bancorporation, Inc., capped off another tremendous year by acquiring the Trust Company of New Jersey, the Garden State’s fourth-largest bank, for $726 million in stock. North Fork is also set to acquire GreenPoint Savings, NYC’s second largest savings-and-loan, for $6.3 billion in stock, giving what was once an East End farmer’s bank a foothold in the Big Apple.
