29. Bishop William Murphy

Since being installed as bishop in 2001 after the death of Bishop James McHugh in 2000, Murphy has had a lot of critics, but just as many supporters. While the Island’s Catholic school program is solid and on the grow, Murphy is still contending with the sex scandals that have rocked parishes across the country, and has made some questionable moves dealing with the scandal along the way. But his fan base is powerful, and the faithful continue to back Murphy despite the missteps of the church. In a time when religion is the focal point of wars and strife around the world, Murphy is a stalwart leader who makes no apologies for his decisions.
