3. James Dolan
2014 Power List
No doubt about it, the most powerful blues guitarist on Long Island—we’re not talking about his musical prowess, although we hear his band’s not bad—strummed the heartstrings of the long-suffering fans of the basketball franchise he owns in Manhattan when he finally admitted that he really doesn’t know much about the game. And so, James Dolan moved heaven and earth to bring NBA Hall of Famer Phil Jackson to Madison Square Garden, where the team’s new president hopefully will help the New York Knickbockers win a long-overdue championship. Dolan’s fortune could indeed be on the upswing, if the hockey team he owns is any example. It’s been 20 years since the New York Rangers were playing for the Stanley Cup—and they got their chance in 2014. Alas, the Rangers didn’t win once against L.A.’s Kings, but they played hockey at such a fever pitch it’s a wonder the ice didn’t melt underneath their skates. Better luck next year, Broadway Blueshirts. Meanwhile, Dolan still has the monopoly on Long Island news, with News12 and Newsday both competing for eyeballs and profits. Play on, blues brother, play on!
