4. Steve Levy
2007 Power List
As he grows close to running for his second term, this Democrat is enjoying tremendous support from both major parties. With the majority in his favor, Levy has been able to move Suffolk forward almost unabated, preserving land, cutting taxes and reducing an enormous deficit in the process. The county has also continued to enjoy bond upgrades. Levy, a former assemblyman, has made a big environmental push, too, helping Suffolk become recognized for its efforts to improve energy consumption and clean up its act. He has also been outspoken about the immigrant population in Suffolk, an unpopular move for some but very popular for others. Levy mounted a war against landlords who rent to multiple occupants, and closed several homes down that proved to be a danger to those living in and around the houses. Truth is, it’s no one’s favorite war, but Levy has not wavered or capitulated at any time. It has been an interesting first term, and with support coming from both sides of the aisle, it is hard to imagine him not getting another four years in office.
