Peter King
Community Leaders
2nd District Congressman
A member and former chairman of the Homeland Security Committee and currently the chairman of the Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, Peter King has earned his reputation as an outspoken and unapologetic voice on Capitol Hill, especially when it comes to national security issues. In 2011, the now-13-term Republican congressman led a series of controversial hearings into Muslim radicalization. Failed 2008 GOP presidential hopeful former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani recently credited King with co-authoring President Trump’s polarizing so-called “Muslim Ban” blocking Syrian immigrants and travelers from six other Muslim majority countries to the United States. (Although he’s refuted that claim.) King’s also been a visible champion of the president’s recent bombing of Syria. He’s not afraid to go against his party’s wishes, however, when he disagrees on certain issues — and when policies will negatively affect his constituents. King publicly voiced concerns about the cost and coverage of the GOP’s ill-fated attempt to repeal and replace Obamacare prior to the collapse of an actual vote. Most recently, he’s called for the president and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer to broker political peace in order to further the commander-in-chief’s legislative agenda with bipartisan support, reasoning that most Americans fall somewhere in the middle of the political spectrum as opposed to its fringes, and would therefore benefit the most from such a collaboration. King’s resounding victories at the ballot box, year after year, prove Long Islanders value him as an independent voice who will stick up for their values and support initiatives he believes are in their best interest.
