10. Shirley Strum Kenny

The president of Stony Brook University has sway over an enormous amount of research projects and facilities, including Brookhaven National Lab. The University employs some 12,000 people, and last year brought in $135 million in research funds. Kenny heads an annual arts contest and is spearheading an aggressive push into Manhattan.
